School Grottos
Grottos are a great addition to any school garden. Their quirky appearance and multiple design options help them to stimulate imaginations and encourage outside play.
Grottos are in meaning manmade caves, in many large scale landscaping schemes of the 19th century they were used to create ore and mystery. The grottos of the gardens of Stourhead are a good example of how grottos were used in gardens. These traditional grottos were either completely man made or built onto or extend rocky outcrops.

Whether completely artificial or semi natural Grottos are great fun combining outside space with naturalistic enclosed rooms. Grottos which are ideal for schools actually look more like fantasy hobbit homes which can be quite striking in garden spaces.
We can build small grottos for schools and even integrate play features or enclose them within the landform of school landscaping. This can include a play mound sweeping over to create a green roof for a play grotto.
